Actually, the motor-voter Act would have allowed for automatic voter
registration at _ANY_ state agency, including welfare and unemployment
offices. The Republicans were against it for the same reason that the
Democrats were for it: Democrats, and "liberals" in particular (a _VERY_
broad and sweeping generalization, I know) are generally acknowledged as
being the "benefactors" of the "downtrodden". This would (conceivably)
make those registered by the act more likely to vote for liberal democrats.

Sorry about raising the ugly head of politics in this gentle and fine
news group. I just had to add this... FWIW, I learned in Boy Scouts that
voting is _NOT_ a right, but a responsiblity, and should be taken seriously.
That is the main reason I oppose the M-V Act. Besides, I don't know what
it was like in the rest of the country, but in _EVERY_ major shopping mall
in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, you couldn't swing a dead cat
by the tail without hitting someone trying to register you to vote! (This is
yet another colorful midwestern phrase). Besides, I voted for Marrou/Lords!
