I certainly don't condone Kate getting all wacky with the dance mixes - they'll ruin anybody, unless the artist truly knows what they're doing (e.g. Aphex Twin, David Byrne, Bowie (last 3 years only)). To me, the distinction is always between whether the artist has conceived of and executed/delegated this dance mix themself, or whether the record label has done it "on their behalf". I don't feel Kate is being forced to extend "Red Shoes" but rather that she chooses to, for better or worse. Regarding Tricky, I'm in no position right now (it's late) to forward a thesis of any kind, except to say that I'm an admirer of Kate, Tricky, and Laurie Anderson, and there's an interesting discussion going on right now on the Laurie newsgroup about similarities between her and Tricky. Oh and by the way, I think I've bitched about Kate/Prince (screw his moniker) to the love-hounds already... The web draws ever tighter... Is it possible that certain artists inevitably appeal to certain sensibilities? How many other hounds dig Laurie, Tricky, Skippy, Pokey, etc.? If anyone coherently pulls Tool into this discussion, I'm really gonna freak... --Mukamuk "D'you wanna hear about the deal that I'm making?"
