RUTH definitely came first in 1985
Big Love is on Tango in the Night which came out in 1987, maybe late '86.
So it's quite possible that Lindsey & Stevie had heard RUTH before or
during writing  Big Love and were thus influenced. 

Interestingly, though both songs are on my all time most favorite list,
I'd never  made an association between them-Thanks for the insight!

BTW There are several other good songs on Tango in the Night, esp the
title track & Caroline, but unfortunately much of the rest is so sweet it
makes my teeth hurt. Yet these 3 are well worth the price of the disc
IMHO.
