If Kate is the Sun, here are some planets that revolve around her in our musical universe. Other Female Vocalists: 1. Akiko Yano (Japan...genius who is married to Ryuichi Sakamoto of YMO fame. She is much more talented and original than he is...IMHO. Plays piano, singer/songwriter, early jazz influences but does just about anything in her own special way. She even did a whole album covering her favorite Queen songs!) 2. Sarah Mclachlan 3. Jane Siberry 4. Emmylou Harris 5. kd Lang 6. Aster Aweke (Ethiopia) 7. Marta Sebestyen (Hungary...who cares what she's singing! That voice!) 8. Isabelle Antena (Where is she from? Sings in English & French. A darker richer brew than Basia's Euro cafe music.) 9. Lisa Ono (Brazil)(Japanese-Brazilian Bossanova Vocalist - A much better singer than Astrud Gilberto, though that may not be hard) 10. Sinead O'Connor 11. Najma (Sings in Urdu...from Pakistan? One whole album has her singing lyrics derived from the works of great Pakistani poets.) 12. Jessye Norman Bands: 1. Cocteau Twins (A true original...although now-a-days they seem to be coasting while other bands like Lush and the Darling Buds try to scale the heights of their best work.) 2. The Cranes (Does anyone have any info on them? A brother & sister mystery act...The second album is brilliant.) World Music: 1. Varttina (Finland)(Celtic)(Ui ui ui ui ui ui ui...After a while you can't help singing along, even in Finnish!) 2. Rankin Family (Canada)(Celtic) 3. The Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir 4. Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens (South African) 5. Rossi (Madagascar...of interest to Gaffans for the instrumentation for Eat the Music among others, Paddy probably has lots of their stuff.) Others: 1. Michael Nyman (Prospero's Books! The Piano! A genius!) 2. Nino Rota (More movie music, but like no other.) We have lots more music but these are the ones that we'll take along on a long trip to play between the Kate stuff. /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) /+) If music be the food of love, eat the music.
