I can add a little more information.  Billboard ran an article about some
exceutive reshuffling in the NY offices of EMI America about that time, and
one of the execs lamented that, in all the confusion, they had let the
renewal option on Kate's contract lapse.  Given that her US contract had
essentially expired, she took a look at other companies and chose CBS (now
Sony).  If the execs at EMI America had been paying attention to business
instead of contending for turf, she would probably still be with them.
