People don't smoke dope in anywhere near the same quantity as they
smoke tobacco. Tobacco has an undeniable detrimental effect on the vocal
cords, the "smokey voice" of the femme fatal. Kate's voice has been
affected by her smoking, and Joni Mitchell's voice has been (IMO)
ruined by it. The combination of smoking and vocal excertion is
deadly; my dad smoked 2 packs a day and was a Punch & Judy puppeteer.
The combination of cigarettes and strain caused lumps on his vocal
cords, and contributed to his dying of lung cancer. I'd hate to see
the same thing happen to Kate.
