Sheila Chandra is British, by way of the Indian subcontinent.  In fact,
before she made her singing debut with a UK-based band called Monsoon, she
had an earlier career as an actress and appeared as a regular in a British
television series -- I think it may have been Grange Hill, or some other
program that had a lot of young actors in the cast.

I think all her most recent releases are on Peter Gabriel's Realworld
label, though she's recorded a lot of material for a lot of other labels.
It's mostly very "challenging" stuff -- with the double-edged meaning that
term implies -- very conceptual and not really pop oriented.

N.B.: the above is written entirely from memory; if I've offended any
hardcore Chandra fans with my fuzzy recollection of the facts, my
apologies.  I've got a memory like a, a, one of those things with lots of
holes in it, you use them for draining pasta, it's right on the tip of my
tongue...
