In <gondola-2201960129250001@ana0015.deltanet.com> gondola@deltanet.com (E.B.) writes: [friendly criticism of TRS and TSW snipped] >I'm sorta lukewarm on Tori Amos, who's so pretentious she >makes Kate seem like the Go-Go's, As long as Tori keeps making music that I can feel in my muscles (we're talking, like, I *am* those piano wires), I'll ignore the fact that she eschews trite lyrical pablum in favor of visceral tell-it-like-it-is honest-to-Tree *poetry* (circa LITTLE EARTHQUAKES) or even kaleidoscopic-to-the-point-of-faerie-tongue weird-ass private-symbolism babble (UNDER THE PINK, and apparently parts of the new album too). Tori is welcome to sing the telephone book to me as long as she keeps producing music like CLOUD ON MY TONGUE or YES ANASTASIA, and avoids songs she can't cover well (like LOVESONG and LOSING MY RELIGION), pretentious or no. I get that muscle thing from "Song of Solomon," BTW, which is one of TRS's better offerings in my book. > but Jane Siberry's When I Was A Boy is a >much better "Kate Bush record" than either Sensual or Red Shoes. Jes' my >two cents.... This comparison has always mystified me. I honestly see no resemblance between Kate and Jane beyond intelligence and a high voice. Oh, and they're both wimmin. The alleged resemblance between Gene and the Smiths is more recognizable to me, though IMO not much closer.
