Well, I'm sticking to my guns on this one. Admittedly my LD player
(an old Pioneer 1450) does have a very bright sound, much brighter
than my CD player, and my speakers have metal dome tweeters, both
of which factors may be exacerbating the problem, but all the same
the hiss is there. It is actually the hiss on the master tapes of the
songs that I meant - it fades out between the songs.

It does sound as though your player may have a problem. My first
LaserVision player, one of the old Philips top-loaders, had problems
playing warped discs, but neither of the digital machines I've had
since have ever had any trouble, even when playing discs that the
Philips player couldn't.

I hope you keep the grilles on your Quads while this is going on.
There could be nasty consequences for speakers and child if not :->.
