Here's a reference that made me remember Kate.... Nonlethal Weapons Give Peacekeepers Flexibility *AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY / 7 DEC 92 / 50:51* * Los Alamos National Laboratory and other defense research sites are developing a diverse arsenal of nonlethal or disabling weapons that may allow peacekeeping forces to defend themselves without triggering all-out warfare. Devices that could disable electronic equipment, blind sensors, or shut down power distribution could allow peacekeeping forces to stabilize volatile situations or buy themselves time. One technology under development, an acoustic weapon, could produce sound at frequencies and volumes that could break windows, incapacitate humans, or even cause internal injuries at short range, said John Alexander, program manager and leader of disabling technologies research at Los Alamos. This type of weapon is large and consumes a lot of fuel, but it could be used at fixed sites, such as embassies, to buy time during attacks by mobs. They are also investigating smaller acoustic weapons to cause disruption for short periods needed for special forces to execute precision operations. -- paul@actrix.co.at (Paul Gillingwater) Home Office in Vienna, Austria
