Syd Straw's album "Surprise" (as far as i know, her only release so
far...) is astoundingly eclectic -- her singing has a lot of country
in it, her songs drift from singer-songwriter standard to strange and
evocative 'alternative' styles, and her backup musicians come from
REM, the dBs, King Crimson, Fairport Convention, the Golden Palaminos,
etc...  i love the album and was delighted by the live show i saw --
highly recommended :)
