I don't know of any specific sources, but I don't think it was personal
experience *or* "war in general" that inspired it.  It seems to me to have
been inspired by various poetry/literature glorifying war and glorifying
the idea of dying in arms for one's country.  It's a way of brainwashing the
youth of a country to become cannon fodder.

"Tears o'er a tin box
 Oh Jesus Christ, he wasn't to know
 Like a chicken with a fox
 He cannot win the war with ego."
