Summary: CD sound quality and digital recording
It is definitely possible to make a great sounding CD on a miniscule
budget--the best way is to use digital recording to begin with.
Warpaint was digitally recorded (check the notes).
Others:
Psychic TV's Descending (1985--thee earliest CD only release i know ov)
and Live in Berlin--both digitally recorded live.
Chris and Cosey's Allotropy--maybe not digitally recorded (doesn't say),
but it has the loonnggesssttt fade-in i've ever heard, and hiss free.
Robyn Hitchcock's Eye--again no notation on recording included, but very
clear sounding.
Also the last 3 Neil Young CDs, all digitally recorded, but doubtless on a
larger budget.
Exceptionally noisy CDs i know of:
Psychic TV's Allegory and Self
Brian Eno's Thursday Afternoon (he might argue the hiss is part of the
ambience)
