Subject: Another World
A few people have mentioned the new Roche's album, "Another World" without saying anything about it, so I guess I'll be the first to stick my neck out. Basically, this one's on my short list for Biggest Disappointment of 1985. Firstly, it's overproduced. There's layer upon layer of drums, keyboards, and bass. This, combined with the Roche's layered vocal stylings combines to produce a 101 Strings effect. Yuck. Second, the lyrics are boring. Oh, there's one flash of the old Roche humour in "Face Down at Folk City" You spend the next seven hours expressing your soul, Then you go into the girls' room and you give it to the bowl. and some movingly bleak imagery in "Weeded Out". Perhaps part of the album's problems is that three production teams worked on it in no particular order. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they're now managed by Teddy Wainwright (I've been disappointed by Loudon's last few outings too). Perhaps there's less amusing in the world today. Or maybe I'm just getting crochety in my middle-age. But there just doesn't seem to be much to laugh at in this album, or in today's music in general. ______ Russ Herman / \ {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!aesat!rwh @( ? ? )@ ( || ) The opinions above are strictly personal, and ( \__/ ) do not reflect those of my employer (or even \____/ possibly myself an hour from now.)
