There was an intersting item on the local radio this morning regarding the Candle in the Wind rewrite. The reporter claimed (and he may have been reading this from a newspaper) that Elton John had phoned Bernie Taupin and asked him to write "something like" Candle in the Wind as a tribute to Diana Princess of Wales. However, as the result of a poor mobile phone connection Bernie Taupin misunderstood and instead of writing a new song as Elton wanted, actually rewrote the lyrics to Candle in the Wind. When he phoned Elton back some time later and read him the new lyrics then Elton decided that they worked so well that they would keep that version rather than do a completely new song. I don't know whether all this is true but if so then it certainly answers some of the criticisms about changing the original song. The record wnet on sale on Saturday and most shops sold out within hours. Reports suggest figures of anything up to 1 million sales in one day and the song entered Sunday's charts at number one.
