The context for the Ninth Wave is a woman who has been stranded in the water and a substantial period of time passes before she is rescued. The woman's past, present and future come to her in turn to keep her awake. In Dream of Sleep she wishes she had a radio to keep her awake. In Under Ice she is dreaming asleep in the water of someone falling through ice into the water. She wakes up abruptly at the end of this song. (Imagine being asleep in the water, rolling over and getting a breathful of water.) Now the stage is set for Waking the Witch. Waking the Witch is her past, Jig of Life is her future, and Watching you Without Me is her present. In Morning Fog she has been rescued. I posted a much longer post on my interpretations of the piece some time back. Kate has stated that she was inspired by several WW2 submarine films in preparing this piece. -- Alan Chamberlin Chamberlin Computer Services http://www.netcom.com/~abckid ---- "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
