That The Spice Girls could merit a # 1 song ? Call me unconventional, but I can appreciate a good "act", as there is still creativity behind the scenes. Sure, they are a totally contrived band, hand picked for obvious reasons, but that never stopped me from liking the Sex Pistols or Bow Wow Wow or The Monkees. I don't limit my appreciation for artists, as I believe Malcom McClaren is a genius for inventing and nurturing the bands he did. I have respect for many successful artists, just for having what it takes to give the people what they want. I don't think The Spice Girls are revolutionary or the greatest group of all time, believe me --- but they put out cutesy bubble gum music that has significant appeal to those not too proud and shoulder deep in music snobbery to enjoy it for what it is.
