It is bizarre where and when Kate Bush will pop up. I was waiting for a friend in the lobby of a five-star hotel in Hat Yai, a town in the South of Thailand near the Malaysian border last Sunday. Suddenly my senses alerted me to a familiar tune ... across the lobby came a muzak version of 'Mna na H-Eirann! I was filled with excitement and confusion and outrage -- that a Kate song had been chosen to become muzakked, that the album had even made it this far, and that a Kate song could be bastardized by those nasty muzak people. Upon returning to my home in Bangkok, I quickly consulted my Common Ground CD and discovered that in fact the tune is traditional rather than an original Kate. Still, it was nice to have the thought of Kate wake me out of my zombie-like state in that lobby. By the way ... just heard the Prince song ''My Computer'' which features (is that the right word?) Kate on backing tracks. What an utter, utter waste of This Woman's Work. It may as well be anybody. The true backing vocal is Prince himself. If I were Kate I'd be bloody furious. Then again, she probably isn't too thrilled about the Muzak people bastardizing her song either. Andrew Biggs
