Well, about time to stop lurking.. >From what I can recall of Gaelic myth, the sea was a powerful entity in many tales. You can imagine how powerful a force it was in the minds of those in the isles when sailing was still a montumentous affair (not to say the sea is any less awesome to modern man). Among the punishments a doomed man could face was to be exiled to the sea on a small raft. Thus, his fate was left to this powerful elemental force. To do so was to go "beyond the ninth wave". This in a way, was the boundry of their world.. outside, was the unknown. This is roughly what I remember of it, and always how I think ofthose images.. the very edge of the known and tangible world.
