satyrnband@aol.com (SatyrnBand) (Mike Gallaher) wrote about The Ninth Wave: > ...I asssumed, based largely on the fact that a woman sang it, >that it was about a woman. That and the Jig Of Life song, which seemed >to me to be about a woman confronted a future self that wanted to >be allowed to exist. Did any of you think it was a man's story related >by a female singer? If so, why? Has Kate said anything to imply the >sex of the protagonist? Am I dense for thinking the obvious? At least >one of the Waking The Witch intro voices I always interpreted to be >a male lover. Then there's the whole "Witch" scene...seems like a female >nightmare to me. I agree with Mike Gallaher, that the person in the story is female. I have always thought so, from the moment I realised The Ninth Wave was a story. It has something in it that I can't pinpoint, but all the lyrics, in the way it is given, I get the impression that it's supposed to be a she. And the title of Waking The Witch just confirms my position, not to mention the lyrics of it. The accuser in the song poses threatingly, and I can't think of another situation in which he will be more intimidating than if the accused was an insecure young lady in, shall we say the late teens? I may be wrong about her age, but then, I have not scrutinised the lyrics. I just tend to imbibe the whole spirit of the story, or blow my brains out by playing Waking The Witch in my 400 Watts car stereo (now I realise why I'm having trouble keeping my car _on_ the road :-) Well that's how I see it anyway. Take care... //Mike (another mike) ============================================================================= Bones: "Say one thing Spock, you never cease to amaze me!" Spock: "Nor I myself..."
