If not, lie to him and tell him they are.
Well, I can't tell from your @line where you are, and which CDs you have.
I have the japanese boxed set, and the CDs in it are certainly much
different, as far as booklet layout is concerned, than the EMI issues
(american); they are, almost universally, much nicer, plus they have
KateLyrics printed in Japanese which is neat. The cover of Never For Ever
is different as well (it's a cropped closeup of the actual cover, which
can be found on page 2 of the CD booklet); and the Kick Inside has the
cover that was issued in Japan, with Kate in a leotard (a really bad
cover, actually; I preferred the 'box' american cover, and over all the
original British kite cover). However, if the guy's saying he'll break up
the set, you should let him know that there are alot of collectors out
there who will pick up the import boxed set versions of the albums just to
have them, because some people apparently have nothing better to do with
their money.
