Having been a cerebral Asimov rather than Heinlein action fan, I read all the Foundation books when I was a kid, and I think I can safely say that the chances are vanishingly small that Kate intended any connection with Asimov's character. Kate herself has said the inspiration for mule imagery was the Disney animated film *Pinochio*. The source for this tidbit is when I chatted with her. *The Shining* is indeed also an influence for the song. In the KBC newsletter many years ago Kate wrote that the book *The Shining* and the movie *The Alien* inspired much of the imagery for the song. |>oug "I hope that life isn't a big joke, because I don't get it."
