you answered your own question at the end of the paragraph (kindly quoted
here for the expiry-impaired):

and a lot of the earlier stuff as well.

(incidentially, i'll readily admit that pure whimsy and a cheap chuckle
were the original impetus for the comment.)

i agree "big stripey lie" a good song, but it'd be tough putting bsl up
against the majority of the songs on _hounds of love_. however, that's
not my intention. 

initially, bsl struck me an interesting tune which, despite the
attention to detail that was given at its creation, sounds more like a
mish mash of instruments than it was probably intended to.  i'm coming
around to it now after many more listenings, though. the comment that
mark semich made about expectations strikes a chord - they can be more
insidious that one might think. regardless, bsl is still not brilliant.
