Background: I never cared for The Sugarcubes all that much. I wished Bjork would dump the dumb rock arrangements and that annoying Einar git. I partially got my wish a few years back when she did two songs with 808 State, both of which are completely great. Now we have Bjork's solo album "Debut" and it's *great*. First thing that jumps out at you: Nellee Hooper's production is really spiff - aeons ahead of Soul II Soul. And then of course the songs are excellent: catchy tunes, interesting arrangements, and of course Bjork's glorious voice over the whole thing. I particularly like "More To Life Than This" which is a kick in the pants to the rave generation. But really, all the songs are winners, with the possible exception of "Like Someone In Love" which is a cover of an old standard, and lacks a little something. Fortunately, the rest of the tracks more than make up for it - "One Day" is a real standout, with a bizarre Orb-like arrangement and some lovely acoustic guitar. Geez - Tori Amos doing a cool electronic number on the "Toys" soundtrack, Bjork knocking me out... whatever next? A listenable Happy Rhodes song? Nah... could never happen... (I hope other women vocalists take Bjork's cue and do some really cool electronic dance-type productions in the future...)
