Oh, but one can.  There's a small strip in the center of a CD (between
the actual media portion and the center spindle) where they stamp the
disc's matrix number, and there's room for small messages too.  (I'm
looking at a They Might Be Giants CD with "MASTERED BY NIMBUS" there.)
