Here's a review that appeared in the "Encore" section of last Sunday's edition of _The Sacramento Bee_. _Solace_ * * 1/2 Sarah McLachlan Arista Records While female singer/songwriters once contented themselves with acoustic guitars or grand pianos, the new wave of ethereal women are studio savvy and less bound by convention. Irish singer Enya's voice floats on pillows of multi-tracked harmonies and synthesizers, and cult queen Kate Bush threads her multi-octave voice through Bulgarian choirs and cool, exotic rhythms. New- comer Sarah McLachlan straddles the two, fusing Enya's smooth melodies with Bush's quirkiness. McLachlan still lacks a bit of what makes the others truly individual, but with this, her second album, she's no long a lady-in-waiting. -- | Tara | "I am you, | "To live is to fly, low and high, | |---------------------| and you are | So shake the dust off of your wings | |---------------------| not me." | And the sleep out of your eyes." | |ez003338@ucdavis.edu | -REM, "LMR"- | -Cowboy Junkies, "To Live is to Fly"- |
