Hetch Hetchy is the name of the reservoir in Yosemite National Park
that supplies San Francisco and much of the surrounding area with water.
It was a very controversial project in the 1950's (I believe) because
it involved the flooding of a valley almost as beautiful as Yosemite
Valley.

A couple of years ago the Secretary of the Interior proposed getting rid
of the reservoir and returning the valley to its natural state. But by
now so many people depend on water from Hetch Hetchy that it just doesn't
seem possible.
