The new issue of BAM magazine (Bay Area Music) has a list of the most influential behind-the-sceneds music industry players of 1989 -- the people who supposedly had the greatest impact of what we heard. Kate, though not listed herself, is mentioned: ED BENNETT There was a time when the VH-1 video channel could have stood for Vacuous Hits. Clips by the likes of Peter, Paul & Mary, Michael Tomlinson, Neil Diamond and Elton John would seque together into a quiet snoozestream. No more, though. Since Ed Bennett took over as president of MTVN's VH-1 in April of '89, he's helped increase the channel's coolness quotient considerably. Nile Rodgers hosts New Visions every weeknight, focusing in on rock, folk, world beat and soul artists. Rodgers's show -- which has featured Rickie Lee Jones, Kate Bush and Michelle Shocked -- recently won an ACE cable award for Best Music Series. At any given time, historical videos by the Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Beatles may be woven into new releases by Sinead O'Connor, Lenny Kravitz and Michael Penn. Let's hope Bennett keeps VH-1 on this "Very Hip" course. So, has anybody seen Kate on New Visions? And if so, does anybody have a tape of it? Ed ed@das.llnl.gov
