Subject: Gabriel in Champaign
Peter Gabriel played here at the U of I Assembly Hall November 15.... It was a great show, very theatrical and performance-directed, but it was painfully obvious most of the crowd was a "SO" assemblage. The opening band was an African group from Senegal, whose name was something in French (too fast for me). Peter came on dressed stylishly in black, and personally introduced the opening band, which electrified the crowd. He performed San Jacinito, Red Rain, Shock the Monkey, Mercy St., Family Snapshot, I Have the Touch, No Control, Family & the Fishing Net, Sledgehammer, *Don't Give Up* (sans Kate), Big Time, Lay Your Hands On Me, This Is The Picture (also known as Excellent Birds from the _Against All Odds_ soundtrack), and a solo version of Here Comes the Flood. Two encores: In Your Eyes, with the Sengalese band, and Biko. All in all, it was a great show in the middle of the cornfields of Illinois. And now for the obligatory punk/new wave questions: When and where are Love & Rockets playing in the Chicago area? How about some information on Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, and Peter Murphy? ---------------------- Michael J.
