The director of "Sorcerer" was William Friedkin (French Connection,
Exorcist, To Live and Die in L.A.). The back of the Sorcerer soundtrack
has a note from him saying that if he had heard Tangerine Dream earlier,
he would have had them to the Exorcist soundtrack for him as well, but
Mike Oldfield got that honor.

I've just done some research on hallucinogens recently, and according to
Douglas P. Ferraro's "Acute Effects of Marijuana on Human Memory and
Cognition" (in "Marijuana Research Findings: 1980", NIDA Research
Monograph 31, pp. 98-119), marijuana increases subjective audio
discrimination. People on marijuana were better able to tell when
additional sounds were added to a set of sounds. This could lead to
better perception of music, but it can also cause you to be distracted
by background noise.
