Subject: a reader's poll
I'd like to propose a new topic for discussion on Love-Hounds : The most abysmally depressing song I've ever heard Preferably, peoples' nominees should be depressing because of what the song is trying to convey, rather than what the song could be (IE anything by Wham! is depressing merely because so many people like it despite it's triteness and utter lack of emotional basis, but "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division is more the type of thing I'm thinking of). For myself, the most abysmally depressing song I'VE ever heard is "St. John" by Tuxedomoon (from the LP "Holy Wars"), which features the lines : A fish taken from out the sea is not without reprieve; It's dieing is a brief affair and then it brings relief. Yet what convulsive death could be as bad as my own life? I live, yet do not live. I wait as life goes by. This life I live alone from you, Is a robbery of life. And the rest of the song isn't any cheerier! "People will always be tempted to wipe their feet on anything with 'WELCOME' written on it..." -Peter Lee
