Might that not be the same thing?  Someone who comes out of the closet might
 feel exactly that way.  "Look, I'm grown up, I made it, I'm my own man(person)
 regardless of what those people did......"

"your son's coming out" might not be specifically about coming out of the
 closet, but it means the same thing........Or do some of you think that being
 gay means you are so alien and foreign that you can't possibly have emotions
 that are the same?

To belabour my point....... heh....... I just really think the song is about a
 specific person, but what is REALLY important in the story is the universal
 aspect of emotions.
