Quite apart from classifying artists into genres, if one just asks, 'If I like Kate Bush, what male artists am I likely to enjoy?,' I'd suggest not only aforementioned Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen, and Tom Waits, but also Daniel Lanois. Like Kate, he's very eclectic, using a variety of world music influences as well as folk and story-telling elements, and he's a 'master of the console.' Most of his work has been production for others (Gabirel, U2, Emmylou Harris), but his own work (Acadie, For the Beauty of Wynonna) is up there *among* the best, IMHO. cheers, Kelley (who is now weary of classification from spending several days a week classifying bits of prehistoric pottery in the archaeology lab. My passion for music is in part an attempt to *escape* classificatory chores...but am glad some of the rest of you post comparisons--that helps me find new [to me] artists!)
