To whom it may concern: Maybe Gaffa is a way of giving a name to the unnameable. Perhaps she is wondering why (or where) she is indeed suspended. She's trying to find a name for that state she has wandered into and can't seem to find her way out of. It's like the hero's journey, as described by Joseph Campbell. The hero (or heroine) wanders into a place of darkness, where he/she must fight a monster in order to win the treasure that will benefit humankind. Maybe Kate is the heroine who is beginning to wonder if the place she has found herself in is something quite beyond her ken. As for the name "Gaffa", if it is indeed unnameable, then I'm sure that any name is as good as any other. Who knows? it may even be a nonsense word, or one from her childhood, or both. Please RSVP with any further ideas. Jon (Siberry)
