which song was under the ivy originally the b-side for? cuz i always think of it as being the flipside (if not the physical b-side) of cloudbusting. the metaphor of the garden pops up in both, so i guess that's why i relate the two. the boy in cloudbusting buries his yo-yo in the garden to keep his father from confiscating it, and later burial in the garden symbolizes the government hiding his father away like a dirty little secret that is nonetheless dear to him. so when kate sing "go into the garden, go into the ivy" with that beautifully restrained intensity, i connect the garden of UTI with that same garden in CB, i.e. a place where she hides what is dear to her, that part of her that nobody understands . . . . i guess my interpretation fits in with several of the other current ones being discussed. william reich (misspelled probably) update: the second volume of his journals is just out and got a lengthy review in the NYTimes Review of Books from yesterday (sun 1/29/95). if anybody is interested, i'd be willing to post them at least part of the text. it's quite fascinating. evidently, the elder reich (that is the last name isn't it?) had a bit o trouble with his own parents. he caught mom in bed with his tutor, and mom committed sucicide shortly thereafter and dad did some years later . . . . brian dillard dillardb@student.msu.edu
