The stones around the legs are clearly referenced, and fit in with the more literal drowning experience. "Waking the witch" could be part of some third party's attempt to revive her, or also the reflex response of waking when collapsing from exhaustion forced the head underwater, introducing suffocating, searing salt water into the mouth and lungs.
