Here's my $0.02,

What if while driving home from that (insert emotional event here)
my *tape* player eats the tape just a little bit.  Since it's my
favorite Kate Tape I don't throw it out cause I managed to pull it
from the machine before it got mangled too bad.

Now my favorite tape has a noticable, scientifically measureable
dropout/glitch.

So now whenever I play my tape and come to that dropout, I am
reminded of said emotional event.

These things don't happen with "hard" media like a CD.  They
don't accumulate audible garbage.
