I didn't say: > Since bootleg CDs are now appearing regularly in underground music > shops, that means SOMEONE has access to CD-recording facilities... Anybody with $ can make a CD. It isn't even slightly difficult. (Well, dealing with CD pressing plants can be stressful, and getting stuff back ON TIME is almost impossible unless you're a major label, but...) Anyway, if somebody really wants to make a bootleg CD, all they need is a DAT machine. You make your DAT, send it to a CD mastering facility, get the digital umatic tape made, send that to the plant along with several thousand bucks, and after a completely random amount of time (4 weeks to 4 months depending on how many orders for Guns'n'Roses CDs are ahead of yours in the queue) you get back many CDs. If you want to pay a little more money, you can even have them individually packaged and shrink wrapped. (Ever assembled 1000 CDs? It's *fun*. (heavy heavy sarcasm)). This whole idea of CDs being the elite recording medium is a total sham played up by the rekkid companies so they can charge $16 for a domestic disc and not have riots breaking out. Oh yeah - CDs cost about $3/each to make. That includes the artwork and jewel box. -- Jon Drukman (God's personal DJ) uunet!sco!jondr jondr@sco.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My, what a peculiar place to have a party!
