Because it makes a good plot device....  It's not there *to* rescue
her.  It just happens to drive by, the periscope bumps into this
floating person, or something, and they decided to stop and recuse
her, just for shits and grins.

Then why the German voice?  Kate has said that part of her inspiration
for the "The Ninth Wave" came from *Das Boot*.  Doesn't it seem likely
that she'd stick a submarine in it somewhere, then?

Side 1 isn't about "life"... it's much more specific than that.  It's
about Love!
