Jumping into the fray...

As far as modern (e.g. rock oriented) crafting goes, I don't think anyone
even comes close to the maniacal intensity of Mr. Mono, Phil Spector.  From
his early "girl-group" tracks, to Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep,
Mountain High" to the opening chord of The Ramones' "Rock 'n' Roll High
School" (which he purportedly listened to hundreds of versions of), Spector
is the absolute champ of no-sound-gets-on-this-record-unless-it's-perfect.
