Oh, wait -- apparently I had missed the crowning thesis of this compilation: ***John Denver***! (All spelling is rendered as it appears in the original.) "On Dec. 20, 1976, _Newsweek_ said, 'As a self-appointed messiah, Denver uses music as far more than entertainment. He sees it as a tool for promoting a the gospel of a new secular religion.' He is involved with Eirhart Seminary Training, or EST. His album _Spirit_ includes the song 'Pegasis' which says, 'Apollo taught me how to fly, oh, how he taught me to live.' Apollo is the major deity of Egyptian arts and poetry. According to Denver, 'Rock music is a greater influence over the souls of men than primitive Christianity.'" Now when my "beautiful music"-loving Italian aunts ask me why I don't like John Denver, I don't have to make subjective excuses about wimpy, uninventive, predictable music just not being my thing; now I can look at them with horror and say, "Don't you realize that John Denver is the Antichrist?" (I can also amaze them by explaining where Apollo fits in ancient Egyptian mythology.)
