Kate Bush Is Back

Since The Red Shoes in 1993 there hasn't been a new album release by Kate Bush. The long wait is now rewarded with no less than a double album. One, A Sea Of Honey, is an `ordinary` collection of songs among which her comeback single King Of The Mountain, the other, A Sky Of Honey, is a kind of rock opera in nine parts with the sound of whistling birds as a binding component.
Pretentious? Moi? Yes surely, but Kate Bush gets away with it. Aerial is her
best album since Hounds Of Love that was released twenty years ago.
Like no other, Kate Bush (47) knows how to laveren between art and kitsch, between intimacy and pathos, between modesty and en megalomania. On Aerial she also schiet in all directions. Her voice is still highly distinctive and the instrumentations are swelling at one point and charming at the other.
Not everything has been done equally ingeniously, for instance her 12 year absence is occasionally audible slightly too clearly in dated arrangements, especially on the second disc. But this is balanced out by a couple of astoundingly beautiful inventions: Mrs. Bartolozzi is a melancholic poetic pondering conjured by the tumbling of the washing machine and listen as well how animatedly Bush sings the first dozens of numbers behind the equation in Pi.
She took her time but the result gains the desired. Kate Bush
proves again that she is one of the very few true artists of pop music.
Completely authentic, with an oeuvre that stands entirely on its own.

Van Kate Bush is sinds The Red Shoes uit 1993 geen nieuwe plaat
meer verschenen. Het wachten wordt nu beloond met maar liefst een dubbel-cd. De
ene, A Sea Of Honey, is een `gewone`verzameling songs waaronder haar
comeback-single King Of The Mountain, de ander, A Sky Of Honey is een soort
rock-opera in negen delen, met als verbindende factor het geluid van fluitende
vogels.
Pretentious? Moi? Jazeker, maar Kate Bush komt er mee weg. Aerial is haar beste
plaat sinds Hounds Of Love van twintig jaar geleden.
Als geen ander weet Kate Bush (47) te laveren tussen kunst en kitsch, tussen
inimiteit en pathos, tussen bescheidenheid en megalomanie. Ook op Aerial schiet
ze alle kanten op. Haar stem is nog altijd uit duizenden herkenbaar, en de
instrumentaties zijn dan weer opgezwollen en dan weer heel charmant.
Niet alles is even knap gedaan, zo is haar 12-jarige afwezigheid een enkele keer
net iets te goed te horen in gedateerde arrangementen, vooral op de tweede cd.
Maar er staan een paar verbluffend mooie vondsten tegenover: Mrs. Bartolozzi is
een melancholieke poëtische overpeinzing ingegeven door het draaien van de
wasmachine, en luister ook eens hoe bevlogen Bush in Pi de eerste tientallen
cijfers achter de komma van dat getal opzingt.
Ze heeft er de tijd voor genomen, maar het resultaat mag er zijn. Kate Bush
bewijst zich opnieuw als een van de weinige waarachtige kunstenaars in de
popmuziek. Volkomen authentiek, met een oeuvre dat volstrekt op zich zelf staat.
