Kate Bush returns after 12 years
A great comeback in the international music scene. After 12 years of silence and
of being away from the public eye, Kate Bush returns with a single followed by a
double album entitled "Aerial", out on November the 7th. "King of The Mountain"
- this is the title of the single - can already be downloaded from the web, but
only in the US and Canada.The CD will be in the record shops on October the
24th.
The long absence from the charts Bush - who still earns about one million pounds
in royalties every year - has further heightened the sense of mystery
surrounding the forty-seven year old composer of Wuthering Heights. The track
brought her to fame in 1978 and still holds the record of being the only number
one track ever written by a British solo artist.
Bush's disappearance from the music business after the release of the album "The
Red Shoes" in 1993 has even inspired a novel,
Waiting for Kate Bush written by John Mendelssohn,
where a fan postpones his suicidal project to finally be able to listen to her
new album. Bush, who lives in an island on river Thames in Berkshire, is so
protective of her private life that for eighteen months the public media did not
know she had become mother. Her son Bertie, now aged 7, has drawn the king of
the mountain for the single cover.

UN GRANDE ritorno e un duetto «eccellente» sulla scena musicale internazionale. Dopo 12 anni di silenzio e di lontananza dalla vita pubblica, Kate Bush ritorna con un singolo che sarà seguito da un doppio album, intitolato «Aerial», in uscita il 7 novembre. «King of the Mountain» - questo il nome del singolo - è già scaricabile su Internet, ma solo negli Usa e in Canada. Il cd del brano arriverà nei negozi il 24 ottobre. La lunga assenza dalle charts della Bush - che guadagnerebbe ancora quasi 1,5 milioni di euro di royalties ogni anno - ha ulteriormente accentuato l'alone di mistero che circonda la 47/enne autrice di «Wuthering Heights». Il disco nel 1978 la catapultò sotto i riflettori e tuttora vanta il primato di essere l'unico numero 1 mai scritto da un solista britannico. La scomparsa della Bush dopo la pubblicazione dell’album «Red Shoes» nel 1993 ha persino ispirato un romanzo, «Waiting for Kate Bush» di John Mendelssohn, nel quale un ammiratore della cantante pospone il progetto di suicidarsi per poter ascoltare il nuovo disco della popstar. L'artista, che vive su un'isola nel Tamigi nella contea del Berkshire, è così gelosa della sua vita privata che per 18 mesi i media non avevano neanche saputo che era diventata mamma. Suo figlio Bertie, che ha oggi 7 anni, ha disegnato il re sulla montagna per la copertina del singolo «King of the Mountain».

Any fan of the English musician will go crazy by coping with the
new rebus included within "Aerial", the new album by Kate Bush.
In previous records some "logos" of the KT letters were included in cover
drawings or photographs, this time the subliminal message is neat, brandished,
but definitely unclear.
At first sight Aerial's cover looks like a maritime landscape, bluffs reflecting
in the sea, but after having stared a little longer here's the answer: it's the
representation of a sound wave.
Could be a message, part of a song, Kate's voice, anything, being it still "untranslated".
Commonly used tools don't allow to import a photo within an audio program,
therefore it is quite impossible to decrypt the message using a software like
Sound Forge or Vegas.
It's obvious that this is a "hook" to intrigue the fans, likely it is only
fool’s gold and the real message, as represented by a source of information
close to Kate Bush's staff, "it is intended to catch fans. It shall be revealed
only when you'll hold the CD", that sounds as 'here's our idea against piracy'.
Anyway.
Aerial shall be out on November 7th, anticipated by the single “King Of The
Mountain”, through radio beginning from October 24th.
Among contributing musicians bass player Mick Karn (who refers having played on
a track called ‘How To Be Invisible' not included in the official tracklist),
jazz drummer Peter Erskine, Stuart Elliott and arranger Michael Kamen who used
the Metropolitan Orchestra of Abbey Road studios; the whole stuff was managed by
faithful producer Del Palmer.

Gli amanti della musicista inglese impazziranno davanti al nuovo rebus proposto da “Aerial”, il nuovo album di Kate Bush.
Nei precedenti dischi erano nascosti nei disegni o nelle fotografia delle copertine dei ‘loghi' raffiguranti le lettere KT, questa volta il messaggio subliminale è netto e spiattellato in faccia, ma decisamente difficile da tradurre.
Al primo sguardo sulla copertina di “Aerial” sembra sia dipinto un paesaggio marittimo, delle scogliere ripide che si riflettono sulla lucentezza del mare, ma dopo aver osservato qualche secondo in più arriva netta la ‘soluzione': si tratta della raffigurazione visiva di un'onda sonora.
Potrebbe essere un messaggio, qualche secondo di canzone, la voce di Kate, qualunque cosa visto che ancora non è stata ‘tradotta'.
Gli strumenti comunemente utilizzati non permettono di riportare una fotografia all'interno di un programma audio, è praticamente impossibile cercare di decifrare il rebus con un software come Sound Forge o Vegas.
E' ovvio che si tratta di un gancio per incuriosire i fan, molto probabilmente è solo uno specchietto per le allodole e il vero messaggio, come ha riferito una fonte vicino allo staff di Kate Bush, “serve solamente ad attirare gli ammiratori. Esso [il messaggio] si rivelerà solo quando avrete il disco tra le mani”, come dire ‘ecco cosa ci inventiamo per contrastare la pirateria'.
Comunque.
“Aerial” arriverà nei negozi il 7 Novembre anticipato dal singolo “King Of The Mountain” in radio dal 24 Ottobre.
Alle registrazioni hanno collaborato il bassista Mick Karn (che dice di aver suonato su un brano intitolato ‘How To Be Invisible' non presente nella tracklist ufficiale), il batterista jazz Peter Erskine, Stuart Elliott e l'arrangiatore Michael Kamen che ha utilizzato la Metropolitan Orchestra negli studi di Abbey Road; il tutto è stato organizzato dal fedele produttore di Kate Del Palmer.

Aerial, the new Kate Bush album, is available in record shops. It is a work that fills a 12 year wait, during which she has been occupied with parallel projects and with what she defines as a "personal enrichment", which allowed her to go beyond the simple popstar role. A role that actually she has never interpreted in a common way, since her debut in 1978: in "The kick inside" the arrangement was that of a terrible and autoironic geisha, precursor of a Bjork-ish kind of restlessness and filled with the ingenuity of a 20 year old girl.
Then everything happened to her, going from David Gilmour (who took her away from a brilliant career as a dancer and mime) to Peter Gabriel, a stylistic evolution carried out between ethnic music and literary references, until the voluntary exile from the more superficial aspects of rock. Her last album, The Red Shoes was released in 1993 and, despite relevant collaborations (Eric Clapton and Prince, for example) didn't go beyond an honorable mediocrity.
Different story for Aerial, double CD dedicated to her son Bertie, born in 1998. The first CD is composed of more or less classic songs, the second one of natural set ups and naive experimentations, in agreement with a curiosity that was completely supported by the productive team without emphasizing the technological aspects. As Bush says "this is a trip through the two sides of a human being, the social and the primitive".
In the first, entitled "a sea of honey", particular relevance is given to songs that play with a rarefied sound on one hand and rhythms on the other, starting from the single "King of the mountain", and continuing to the amused "How to be a mountain" and the hypnotic "Pi", a charade on the magical number that allows to obtain the length of a circumference starting from its radius.
"I want to make clear that this is not a new age CD" - Kate precises - "I've just decided that it was the moment for me to publicly express emotions that have been growing in me for such a long time. Recording in my studio day after day, I realized that a single CD would not be enough and so the idea of the two chapters of Aerial took life".
The listening is in fact pretty much like a progression: starting from pure pop to arrive to a form of expression more mystical and also funny in bits when it comes to the part entitled "a sky of honey": a conceptual suite divided into nine parts, dealing with bird songs and the energy of light and describing the passing of a whole day.
"I could play" - says Bush - "with the semi-classical style that I love, with its open spaces and acoustic sounds, and create the tracks using a band playing live, giving particular importance to the percussions". A work divided in pieces of time, where Kate could alternate moments spent working 14 hours a day with moments of pure creative holiday, spending her working time in her own studio and relying on names such as the percussionists Steve Sanger and Peter Erskine and historic collaborations such as Gary Brooker (Procol Harum) and the guitarist Danny McIntosh.
The final result here and there appears to be rather dispersive, although with some irresistible moments, such as Mrs. Bartolozzi, hymn to a housekeeper that finds herself enchanted in front of the washing machine, sung with a typical Tori Amos touch. Good part of the rest of the album is quite uncommercial and, despite being of a high level, misses that kind of electric shock typical of the better past of Bush.
It is a pardonable sin anyway: Aerial remains a curious and well built journey inside human emotions, carried out far from cliches and rethoric.

Arriva nei negozi Aerial, nuovo album di Kate Bush: lavoro che colma un'attesa lunga 12 anni, fatta di progetti collaterali e di quello che l'artista inglese chiama un "arricchimento personale", che le ha permesso di andare oltre il semplice ruolo di popstar. Un ruolo, in verità, che lei non ha mai interpretato in maniera canonica, fin dal suo esordio nel 1978: in The Kick Inside l'atteggiamento era di una geisha terribile e autoironica, precorritrice di inquietudini alla Bjork e piena dell'ingenuità dei vent'anni.
Poi le è successo di tutto: collaborazioni eccellenti, dal suo mentore, David Gilmour (che l'aveva strappata a una brillante carriera di ballerina e mimo) a Peter Gabriel, un'evoluzione stilistica stretta fra musica etnica e riferimenti letterari, fino il volontario esilio dai risvolti più fatui e leggeri del rock. L'ultimo suo vero album, The Red Shoes, era datato 1993 e, nonostante cameo di tutto rilievo (Eric Clapton o Prince, per esempio) non si sollevava oltre una onorevole mediocrità.
Diverso il discorso per Aerial, doppio CD dedicato al figlioletto Bertie, nato nel 1998. Il primo volume è di canzoni più o meno classiche, il secondo di ambientazioni naturali e di sperimentalismi naif, in sintonia con una curiosità che il team produttivo ha assecondato senza enfatizzarne i risvolti tecnologici. Come dice la stessa Bush, "si tratta di un viaggio nelle due facce dell'essere umano, quella sociale e quella primitiva".
Nella prima, titolata A Sea Of Honey, hanno la meglio brani che giocano sul rapporto fra rarefazione sonora e ritmo, a partire dal singolo King Of The Mountain, passando per la divertita How To Be A Mountain e l'ipnotica π (pi greco), una sciarada sul numero "magico" che permette di ricavare la lunghezza di qualsiasi circonferenza, partendo dal suo raggio.
"Non si tratta di un disco new age, sia chiaro - precisa Kate -. Ho semplicemente deciso che era il momento di esprimere pubblicamente sensazioni che ho covato in me per tanto tempo. Incidendo, giorno per giorno, nel mio studio, mi sono accorta che un solo CD non sarebbe bastato e così è nata l'idea dei due capitoli di Aerial".
L'ascolto in effetti procede in progressione: dal pop verso una forma di espressione più mistica e anche buffa, qua e là, simboleggiata dalla parte chiamata A Sky Of Honey: opera concettuale divisa in nove movimenti, imperniati sul canto degli uccelli e sull'energia della luce, che descrivono lo scorrere di una giornata intera.
"Ho potuto giocare - racconta la Bush - con lo stile semiclassico che adoro, fatto di spazi e suoni acustici, proporre i brani accompagnati dalla band, in cui la batteria svolge un ruolo importante". Un lavoro a sprazzi, in cui Kate poteva passare dalle 14 ore di lavoro al giorno a una specie di vacanza creativa, consumando il tempo nel suo studio e potendo contare su nomi come i batteristi Steve Sanger e Peter Erskine e collaboratori storici come Gary Brooker (fondatore dei Procol Harum) all'organo Hammond, il chitarrista Dan McIntosh.
Il risultato finale, qua e là, appare un po' dispersivo, anche se riserva qualche momento irresistibile: è il caso di Mrs. Bartolozzi, inno a una donna delle pulizie che rimane incantata davanti alla washing machine (la lavatrice), cantata con un impagabile tocco alla Tori Amos. Buona parte del resto non si concede al pop di facile consumo e, pur rimanendo di alto livello, manca della scossa elettrica del passato migliore della Bush.
Un peccato abbastanza veniale, comunque: Aerial rimane un viaggio curioso e ben costruito dentro le emozioni umane, affrontato lontano dai luoghi comuni e dalla retorica.
